It is against this background that The Handbook of International Trade Finance is written. As the trade flows around the globe change and as international trade impacts more and more upon not only businesses but also the life and well-being of every man, woman and child on the planet, it is a matter of deep importance that the decision-makers in countries and companies have clear and ready reference to the tools available. It redounds to the credit of business people, bankers and statesmen world- wide that major initiatives have been launched at the start of the final decade of this century-debt forgiveness in Africa and Latin America, rapid moves to a single currency in Europe and an increase in world aid percentages. This is welcome but it means that the seas in which we sail are increasingly uncharted.
